Tainan city (台南市) is the historic capital of Taiwan and is generally considered THE place to go if you want to learn anything about Taiwanese culture and history. The thing about Tainan is that as Taiwan’s oldest city it has developed through several periods of foreign rule borrowing bits and pieces of culture, cuisine and architecture blending it all together making a city that is truly one of the most important places to visit whenever you visit Taiwan. Like Rome, the historic downtown of Tainan is perfectly walkable and the aged streets, buildings and temples are an absolute pleasure. Not enough can be said about Tainan, like you, I also need to spend a lot more time down there soaking up all the great Taiwanese culture and cuisine!
